SCHBSIF Scholarship Fund
General Information
The SCHB Self Insurers Fund’s Board of Trustees awards five $1,000 merit-based scholarships each academic year to qualified individuals. The awards are based on the recommendations of a panel of independent judges who are not associated with the fund based upon scholastic achievement, extra-curricular activities and community involvement. Scholarships are paid directly to the college or university on behalf of the recipient. Additionally, awardees and their parents are honored at an awards dinner in Columbia, typically held in late June.
General Qualifications
To be eligible to apply for one of these scholarships, the applicant must be the child, grandchild, great-grandchild or dependent of a current SCHB Self Insurers Fund policyholder in good standing or the child, grandchild, great-grandchild or dependent of a policyholder’s direct employee. Children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren or dependents of policyholders’ subcontractors are not eligible.
The applicant must be a graduating high school senior, a high school graduate yet to begin post-secondary education or a current college student with at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, be an American citizen or legal resident, and must have been accepted to an accredited two-year or four-year public or private university or college within the United States.

Please note that there is a new requirement beginning in 2020 for high school seniors or recent graduates who have not been full-time college students (post-secondary applicants). Those filing the High School Senior or Graduate form must include a copy of their school’s profile. This can typically be obtained through the high school’s guidance counseling department.
Applications
Applications are available below during the application acceptance period. The application is not available outside of the acceptance period as each is year-specific.
There are two different applications; one for those who have never attended college and one for those who have attended college and are continuing to pursue or expand their degree. It is important to submit the proper application. If there is any question as to which application form should be used, please contact us using the contact form on our website.

Tips and Tricks for Scholarship Application

All application packets must be postmarked no later than April 15 of each year. If April 15 falls on a day when the United States Postal Service is not operating, the application packet must be postmarked no later than the last operating day prior to April 15. Application packets postmarked after April 15 are never considered.
Recipient Selection Process
As application packets are received, they are screened against qualification requirements by the staff. Only those that meet all requirements are copied, assembled and forward to the judges. All application packets are retained by SCHBSIF regardless of qualification status.
The judges independently score the applications, which results in a ranked listing. The judges compare their rankings with the other judges’ rankings and, through discussion amongst themselves, arrive at a list of five recommended recipients, which is presented to the Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees votes during a regular monthly board meeting to award scholarships to the recommended recipients, thus makes each an awardee. In 2013 and 2019, the judges were hopelessly deadlocked between two applicants as the fifth recommended recipient. In this very rare instance, the Board voted to award an additional scholarship as an exception for those years.
Notification Process
Awardees are notified by email and regular mail of their award along with the date, time and location of the awards dinner.
